LULU // Pacific Waves
Our Lulu bracelet is handcrafted from water buffalo horn bone. Each bead is individually carved, stained with tea leaves and then hand painted in a calm, wavy mud print design before polished.
Our talented professional artists are located in Mombasa, Kenya where bone bead and pendant making is a highly regarded practice and supports the oceanside village with vital resources to continue the centuries-old process.
The wave bead design on our Lulu bracelet is called a “mud print” because it resembles the style, artistry, and process of making African mud cloth— dying fiber and textiles with mud. For a bead to be considered a true mud print, it must be made completely of bone or horn, hand carved, hand dyed or painted, and bear a stark contrast in colors. Bone beads were first produced by the Oromo Tribe of Northern Kenya hundreds of years ago and the patterns (stripes, spots, and teeth) were inspired by wildlife and domestic animals.
